Tree collars are all the rave this holiday season! They add a nice modern and even a farmhouse twist. I had purchased this tree collar, which was on sale at the time, but when I put it under our tree, it was a little short, leaving the tree stem showing. Shortly after(and I cant take credit for it, myself), I came across this awesome DIY Christmas Tree Box tutorial from one of my favorite home bloggers @ahousewebuilt on Instagram. Their home is nothing short of amazing! You can find their post with pictures of theirs here.

So, I began politely begging asking my husband to see if he could build it for me. Since he was about to spend the entire weekend in the woods sitting hunting, leaving me alone with all 3 kids, he gladly said that he would! haha We took some quick measurements of the tree stand and off my husband went for the supplies to Lowes Since our ceilings are 9ft we werent able to follow the diy tutorial to an exact. We just left ours open on the bottom so the stand would sit directly on the floor, so if you have higher ceilings, following her tutorial exactly will work better. Since our tree box would be shorter up and down, we didnt put the X design on the outside of the box.
Here’s the items you’ll need to build the box:
- 7 x 2x4x8
- 15 1x3x8
- 2” screws
- Kreg Jig: Amazon | Home Depot
- Power drill: Amazon | Home Depot
- Impact driver: Amazon | Home Depot
- Miter saw: Amazon | Home Depot
- Measuring Tape
- Pre-stain conditioner: Amazon
- Gray stain (one coat): Amazon
- old cloths that you can use for the conditioner & stain
- rubber gloves
Read on the directions on the pre stain conditioner first, but I waited about 30 minutes before applying the stain. You want to wait long enough for it to soak into the wood, but not too long that it becomes dry and then doesn’t do its job efficiently. I just dipped my old cloth into the stain for application. I felt like this application method, I had more control of, instead of using a brush. Also by using the cloth, I was able to wipe off any excess stain.

It dried fairly fast and after my husband was home from sleeping hunting in the woods, that night, he brought it in to see how it looked. It turned out gorgeous!! Now, I will say if you like to put all of your presents under the tree, that is the benefit of having the tree skirt, is that they can all fit underneath it. With the tree box, you definitely have to place your presents around the box! Overall, I couldnt be happier and anything we DIY, has so much more meaning and we appreciate it more!
I have seen other tree collars several places, so if you’re interested in just shopping them, here are some:
